On to the next round

Sadly not a classic yesterday, but those that rolled up, blew out the cobwebs and shook the last of the wedding cake crumbs from the kitbags , once again did us proud. Great to see the three Black Country Amigos on the same pitch together again, blended with the old faithful and more than a smattering of new faces, can't get enough of those, but don't expect me to know who anybody is yet, I'm still struggling with the guys from last season. Ordinarily we all flash down the fixture lists and see where we fancy picking up points. Traditionally we don't necessarily fayre well against the cliubs with a 100 years of history, a clubhouse full of memories, an enviable infrastructure, and a never ending feed of new players, so looking at Old Yards before the game yesterday shouldn't really have bode that well for us. I was tapped by Old Yards following a PR game from work, ten years before Harborne came knocking, and I was told that was no mean feat at the time!

What rolled up yesterday beggared belief. True, they had a number of good running prospects that I'd have been happy to watch alongside our boys, the double try scoring kicker being one, although a primrose coloured headguard must surely have incurred a fine, but for the rest, they didn't really do that nice new kit justice.

Harborne had the majority of the play in the first half, and Yards were distracting themselves by their indiscipline, the referee being harangued by the opposition support, did well to remain neutral, if not always clear. tries by Kip Withers following a fingertip pick up from a mazy Aido run (and pass if you believe it?), and a fine 18 yard run in for Ciaran Murphy to open his seasons account!

We lost our way a little at the start of the second half and the scoreline started to close, even though there were still a couple of Old Yards being more than a little punchy, and snide with it. A third try for Harborne, ( missed by yours truly being temporarily indisposed!) scored I believe by Will Arnold, and crucially converted by Chris Keogh for 2/3! Old yards steaming straight back down the field to record their third try too, this being in the final minutes of the game, there was an audible sigh of relief, that we'd converted one more than them. The game close enough, that they'd finished the game camped in our 22! My apologies that I wasnt at my most mobile yesterday, but for the record, the pictures do include Kips grounding, an Aido pass, and through a sea of chunky fellas, there is Ciaran, just about to perform his try celebration.

A good start boys, and once again thank you to the faithful support, that still come out on the last sunny afternoon of the Summer, to support you so well!
