Venture back to the start of the season and you will remember our away trip to Edwardians, a young (ish) team full of promise and gaiety - only to be met with the ruthlessness of Edwardians in their own backyard. Needless to say we lost, not much from what I remember (I try to block it out) but the only 2nd team loss in the league that everyone was hoping to put to bed in this, the final game of the season.
Phil had though ahead and had contacted everyone for this chance to have a run out, last game of season and all, and he was delighted with the response of 24 players. This came in handy when in the true spirit of rugby Harborne players volunteered to run out with Edwardians when they were short. Notably Roger Saunders for most of the game.
Anyway, we everyone knowing this could be their last 40mins for awhile we kicked off and had at them. It was fast and furious and both sides were keen to show their intent in running with ball in hand.
Edwardians, with a few players out of position, were still making a game of it but the Harborne defence held firm with a lethal combination of old head (Fingers) and young head (Tom) in the centres nothing came close.
With Phil, Aaron and Ritchie re-united up front there was easy ball at the base of the scrums for Anthony to pick and go, which he did with vigour. With able support in the brothers Chitham Harborne quickly took the upperhand.
The first try came from Aaron as he came from deep to crash over.
The second try was Anthony picking and going from 8, the opposing side opened up and he strolled over. Which was the same as his second try.
Tom Joyce picked his first up from a nice running line off Robbo and he seared his way up through some tackles to score. His second was in the 2nd half and was simple hands as gaps opened up.
I got mine from a pick and go at the base of a ruck, I would like to say I carried 3 or 4 over with me but I fear it was just one.
Anthony got his third and fourth from his agility and speed, surprising for a wee man, as he carved his way through the opposition. he almost got a fifth but for someone up-ending him with a beauty of a tackle - even if I do say so myself.
Lee playing at scrum half picked his up from his ever present sniping which came with due reward.
Rob Thom, playing out in backs I think, picked up the last one shortly after I cleared Fingers out who did not see me when he took a quick lineout. Simple hands and a good support line gave Rob his try.
Pete Robbins, marshalling from 10, kicked 8 from 10 - no-one's perfect - still better than Keogh ;-)
That's about it lads, see you next season, much love xx
